This is a beautifully written story that renders complex emotions and other descriptions with clear, clean language and not a single unnecessary word. This is obviously the beginning of a rich and engaging series of stories, and I wait impatiently for more. (A small niggle, from one writer to another--check out the correct usage of 'that' and 'which'. 'Which' is used after a comma, 'that' is used otherwise. There's a more technically correct description of this rule available in standard grammar usage rules, but this is the easy way to describe it. It didn't happen very often, but I did notice it. Feel free to remove this comment from the published review.)
I was greatly surprised to discover this read to be a long science fiction short story rather than a personal experience event of one in the wilderness. Naturally I was very disappointed.
This story had wonderful flow and imagery. I felt like I was sitting right there watching what transpired on Jack's journey. I would have given it Five stars if it was longer. I want to know more about this world and Jack, oh pretty please!
I want more first off. I read this in one sitting and loved it, except how abrupt the ending felt. Maybe I've gotten spoiled reading novels that can meander but it was still a good read. I want to know more about the Ntaba and the steppers. It also reminds me a lot of another series I love by Stephen Lawhead the Bright Empire.
